Burg for Congress Statement We Need A New Voice In Congress

(Howell, New Jersey) SATURDAY, JANUARY 8, 2022 — David Burg, Republican Candidate for Congress in New Jersey’s 4th Congressional District, issued the following statement in regards to Congressman Chris Smith’s Guest Column, “One Year Later, January 6 a Tragic Day for Our Nation.”

David Burg said: “Congressman Smith’s January 6 statement is yet further proof that – after 40 years and 21 terms in office – we need a new voice in Congress. At this dire moment, when our country hangs in the balance, who wants mealy-mouthed platitudes from Republican so-called leaders? We want Republican fighters who are determined to get to the truth about what actually happened on and before January 6.”

“We want Republican fighters who will work to ensure that every American charged with a crime on January 6 is afforded his or her basic Constitutional rights, including the right to a speedy trial and the right not to be singled out for harsh treatment solely because of political views.  This includes hundreds now being held before trial in horrendous conditions, in some cases charged with no violent crime. And we want Republican fighters who understand the dire threat posed by our political opponents’ shameless exploitation of the awful events of January 6.”

“It certainly was tragic that some number of violent thugs took advantage of widespread Republican frustration and anger over the 2020 election – which had boiled over during the preceding weeks and months, including for the reasons examined by Mollie Hemingway in her terrific book Rigged: How the Media, Big Tech, and the Democrats Seized Our Elections – to indefensibly assault police officers, overrun barriers, climb walls, break glass, destroy public property, and forcibly enter the Capitol.  These foolish people besmirched their fellow Trump voters and did immeasurable harm to our beloved country.”

“But a much larger – and far more invidious – tragedy of January 6, 2021, is the Left’s manipulation of this political riot into a Reichstag Fire-like event – with evidence-free accusations of an “armed insurrection” and brazen comparisons to Pearl Harbor, 9/11, and the Civil War – to justify a fascistic crackdown and purge of their political enemies. We must not let this continue!”

“And here’s one more “tragedy” of January 6:  That Congressman Smith can’t be straight with his constituents. Congressman Smith claims to have voted “NO” on Pelosi’s outrageous January 6 “select committee.” But he fails to mention that he’d voted “YES” – with Pelosi – just one month earlier!  (“Chris Smith votes yes on Jan. 6 Capitol revolt commission; Van Drew opposes,” New Jersey Globe, May 19, 2021, https://newjerseyglobe.com/congress/chris-smith-votes-yes-on-commission-to-investigate-jan-6-capitol-revolt-van-drew-opposes-measure/.)”

“Perhaps Congressman Smith had a change of heart.  But honest leaders acknowledge and explain such serious errors of judgment. Republicans in Congress must FIGHT against Democrat propaganda about January 6 – not spout meaningless drivel parroting the leftwing media. That certainly is how I will speak about January 6 if given the honor of representing the people of NJ’s 4th District in Congress.”
